About Morgantown Homecoming

Morgantown Homecoming is a program of the Fairmont-Morgantown Housing Authorities (FMHA). Our program’s mission is to promote home ownership and housing choice in Morgantown’s in-town neighborhoods, including Greenmont, Wiles Hill, Woodburn, and First Ward. We purchase single-family homes in those neighborhoods, then rehab the home and sell it on the open market. FMHA also builds homes on infill lots as part of Morgantown Homecoming. Sales are not contingent on a buyer’s income. All Morgantown Homecoming homes are sold with an owner-occupied deed restriction, mandating the legal owner occupy the home as his or her primary residence. This program began in 2005, based on findings of the 2002 Comprehensive Housing Study.

Those findings included the following. First, rental units are the predominant dwellings in a majority of Morgantown neighborhoods. Second, the Greenmont and Wiles Hill neighborhoods had very high rates of tenancy.  Such high concentration of rental properties negatively impact quality of life for all neighborhood residents. There is little developable land within the City limits; if there is to be any residential property growth, it must be infill on small urban lots, or redevelopment of existing homes.

Morgantown Homecoming is funded by FMHA, with assistance of the West Virginia Housing Development Fund. Staff and marketing are provided by a grant from the C.W. Benedum Foundation, received in March 2008.
